Whether it’s on the Web or through traditional brick-and-mortar stores, thousands of new businesses are emerging every day. If you don’t have a game plan in place to make your business stand out, then your business isn’t going to survive.

How do you stand out? You need to be marketing your business every day. Some businesses claim that their budget is too bootstrapped and that they can’t afford to allocate funds to marketing. This makes as much as sense as saying you can’t afford to buy ointment for a burn, so you’re just going to keep burning yourself since you’ve already bought the flame. Marketing and advertising is what brings in new business-the ointment to your burn.
By actively promoting your business on a regular basis, you establish a presence. In order to get noticed, you’ve got to be putting yourself out there. Think of it this way. Imagine your business is a boat, floating out their in the business ocean. If you don’t have any fishing lines in the water, do you expect fish to simply jump into your boat? Sure, you’ll get the occasional word-of-mouth minnow who happens along once in a while, but nothing that will sustain your crew.
You need to get your marketing lines in the water to attract the bigger fish. But a careful balance should be obeyed here. Not enough lines in the water and you’re going to remain very hungry, and if one of those lines gets snagged and snaps, you’ve left yourself with too few options. Likewise, if you have too many lines in the water, you risk the chance of entangling your lines and burning through your marketing budget. If you continually check and test your lines, then you’ll find out which marketing approaches are getting the best ROI.
